Racism in the work place

Worker Finds 'Lynched' Coke Bottle in Auto Plant; Sues Toyota for Racism

The article I Chose to do can be found on the Ethnic News Watch data base. The article is called "Worker Finds 'Lynched' Coke Bottle in Auto Plant; Sues Toyota for Racism" and it is about what it says. Its about a Black worker who has delt with racism his who career at toyota. since he has been there he has delt with people drawing swastikas and people calling him the N - word and being told to go back to Africa. I chose this article becuase it is similar to the Jenna 6 case that we discused in class. I also chose this becuase we had to get one aricle off Ethnic News Watch and the database didn't seem to get me much to work with at the time I tried to use it.
This article relates to the jenna 6 material we discused in class. That was about a black kid sitting under a tree that only whites normally sat at. After he sat there, there was nuses hung at the tree. This was done to send the black students a message. After this fights broke out between blacks and whites and some of the black students were jailed. The article about the coke bottle is similar becuase the Lynched coke bottle was put up to send James Callier a message. His co - workers wanted to make him feel unwelcome. They sent messages to scare him, similar to the jenna 6 case.
In my Opinion, I think that Mr. Callier was right in sueing the company. They should never had the right to let that activity go on in the work place. He should not have had to leave the company. Everyone else should have been fired for being racist and doing things that are not work related in the work place. Im sure toyota would not want to be known for being racist.

carlos mencia

The item I chose was on you tube. Carlos Mencia is a comedian with his own show on comedy central. He is known for telling racist jokes about all races. The purpose of his show is to show stereotypes of races and to poke fun at racism. When searching for skits he does for portfolio item, I found this stand up which shows clear examples of sterotypes towards Asians. I Chose this item because it is a clear example of racial stereotypes. This video is very explicit and has cus words as well as racist words in it.
This item relates to the Frank Wu reading "Yellow". The reading talked about how people viewed Wu when they would see him, as if they already knew about him even if they didn't know him. They think all Asians act the same. This Carlos Mencia stand up video is a perfect example of this. In the video Carlos first talks about how all Asians are smart and do well in school. The video also says how all Asian parents are scrict on thier children when it comes to grades. When he portrays the Asian kid he gives him and accent. Here he uses the stereotype that all Asians talk the same and all have the same accent. Later in the video he says something about how can all asians be so smart, but they can't learn how to drive. This is the stereotype that they are bad drives. Finally he says a sexual coment about Asian males, saying they are all similar in a certain way.
In my opinion, I think that this youtube video of Carlos Mencia is a perfect example of what Wu was saying about Asian sterotypes. I think that these sterotypes are not true. I know a buch of Asian Americans who do not talk funny, or can drive a car well. There are a lot of smart Asians in school. This does not mean that all asians are smart, or that they are smart because they are Asian.

Japanesse

This is an article I found when looking for information about Interment camps. It is an article stating why interment camps are good and needed. It talks about since after the war, which I am asuming is World War II, that the Japanesse are plotting against the United States since the war. It mentions that the Jappanese are good for agriculture and states that there are over 100, 000 japanesse here and that almost 80,000 of the were American citizens. It says that when we started the investigation we found that the Japanesse government plantted a Japanesse state in the Californian border. It finishes the article by saying that there are Japanesse spys here that report back to the government and some of them are in the American headquarters. I chose to do a portfolio on this article becuase i found it ineresting to find first hand facts of American fear towards the Japanesse during the 1940s. Plus, this relates to class materials on internment camps

This item relates to our class study on racism towards the japanesse and interment camps. I think that this article relates both to the comic covers and well as the video we watched over internment camps in class. It relates to the comic covers becuase the article was written to put fear in Americans of the Japanesse, that they are plotting agaisnt us and are out to destroy us. On the other hand it relates to the video we watched over interment camps becuase the video says that the Japanesse are happy there and that we are providing them a good life in the relocation centers. It is bascally saying we are just in what we did and that there is nothing wrong with it, and they are not like concentration camps. This article says that the relocation centers are just becuase we need to prevent the Jappanesse from plotting against us, so we need to keep an eye of everyone who is of Japanesse dicent here in the United States.

In my opinion this article was written by the government to scare the American public and make them distrust the Japanesse. They wanted the public to agree with them, so no one would complain about the interment camps. I think this affected stereotypes for Asian americans as well. People most likey viewed all Asains in negative ways during this time.

Rocky vs. Soviet Union

This photo is from the moive Rocky IV, which came out in 1985 during the peak of the cold war. The movie is about Rocky a fictional American boxer who is the world champ. During this movie the Soviet Union has a boxer who claims he is the best in the world and better then every American. Rocky's good friend Apollo challenges the Russian to a charity fight and is beat to death during the fight. After the fight, the Soviet' s challenge Rocky to a fight against the Russian on Christmas in Russia. Rocky trains hard and goes to Russia and beats the mighty Russain and everyone is happy and the movie ends. This movie came out, while we had tensions with the Soviet Union and communism during the Cold War. I chose to do a media portfolio on this because this relates to the segment we did on the Japanesse, how they were viewed as evil in the eyes of Americans.
This item relates to the comic covers we looked at a few weeks ago in class. The comic covers all had similar themes. They had a Strong brave American who was viewed as the hero, and the small, evil, savage like Japanesse, who posed as the villian in the comics. All the comics were put out to make the Japanesse look like bad guys. This is similar because the movie made all the soviets look evil from the Soviet leaders, to the soviet boxer. The Soviet boxer was made to look like a big monster with no heart. They made him look evil, by killing a good American hero at a boxing charity event that didn't mean anything. Rocky was viewed as a fictional boxing hero in America at this time. He was viewed as the good hard working hero in this movie. When training for the fight they had gave rocky no equipment and had him trian with whatever he could find and made his training look really hard. They made he Russian look like he trained hard as well, but they gave him all the latest equipment and also gave him steriods. The fight took place in Russia and Rocky was the heavy underdog. The Russians were booing Rocky until the end, where he beat the invincible Russian. Every cheered for him including the Russians and he was the hero. This movie was put out during the cold war becuase the government wanted to get the message out that the Soviets were evil. Rocky movies were very popular so this was a good way to show the public that. Like the comic books The American came out as the hero who saved the day against the mighty Russian instead of the Jappanesse.
In my opinion, I think this movie did a good job of making the soviet union look evil. It was kinda like the Miricle on Ice, where the American hockey team was a huge underdog to the Russians and came out victorious at the end. When i first saw this movie as a little kid it did make me think that Russians were evil because i didn't know any better. Russians are no longer viewed as evil in America and that is because the Soviet Union ended in 1991.

mexican picture

http://la.indymedia.org/news/2004/04/109209_comment.php
This image can be found on the cover of one of the local papers in California, OC WEEKLY. The cover is drawn to show how people view stereotypically view mexicans. The picture shows the mexican man wearing a sombrero and a vest, which most images of mexican are viewed wearing similar clothes. During halloween their were many people dressed up in this same attire. It also shows the man having low eyes, indicating that he is sleepy. Being sleepy could symbolize that the man is lazy as well, which many people stereotype mexicans as. The character also has dark skin and a mustache which is commonly seen. Lastly he has a cross around his neck. Mexicans are viewed as very religous. The cross also indiates that they are christians and all worship Jesus, which is another stererotype. I chose this image because we learned about stereotypes in class and we are currently are learning about racism towards mexican americans.
This items relates to class because it is similar to Welcome to Cleveland in class activity we did earlier this year. Welcome to Cleveland was an article about racist stereotypes towards Native Americans through the Cleveland Indians Mascot. It showed pictures of racist stereotypes of other images. One of these images was of a mexican. The picture showes a man wearing a sombrero and he has a mustache as well. This is similar to the image in OC WEEKLY.
In my opinion, I think that is a racist stereotype of mexicans. Growing up watching cartoons such as the loney toons and others i saw latinos portrayed in this manner. Like I stated earlier during halloween i saw several cosumes of people wearing a sombrero, a sancho, and a fake mustache, which is exactly like the image in the article.
